I've had these two fish for years (someone told me they were parrot fish). I just changed the water in the fish tank and now one of them is hovering near the top next to the filter, that fish is still alive and moving but he won't move far off. Is it just the temperature change in the water that makes my fish act like this, how can I help the fish? Check if the water in the tank is quickly moving. It should aerate the tank if it is barely moving you will not inject any air. Typing very fast, trying to save your pet.
If your next to a pet store get yourself a pH tester! It may be life and death. You may want to buy yourself a special chemical in the store if the water is bad pH balanced.
You do need to keep some old water as someone said. Because it retains some of the good bacteria. The fish might have gotten into shock.
Did you make sure not to put too much of chemicals? Some chemicals can't be intermixed.
Check your filters as far as know if you have the filter that embeds into gravel check if it has not become clogged. If it is one of those cornerstone check if it has not become full of fish feces (you would be surprised things between sponge). You may need to replace the carbon.
Check your pipeline from the water pump. If anywhere opening, you may be depriving the fish of air. Usually when the pet starts swimming up it is trying to extract the air. It is gasping and may die if whatever cause not resolved.
Does this fish species need some salt? You may have forgot if so! Just top of my head at the moment. (you may already know duh! but just reminder not table salt!)

When/how should I change my water?
I have a 55 gallon tank with 11 fish: 5 rasboras, 4 platys and two juvenile angelfish. I have an undergravel filter and I'm looking to get a power filter soon.
1. Should I do a 10% water change once a week or a 25% water change once a month? All water will be treated with conditioner and a dechlorinator.
2. Am I supposed to let the water sit out before I add it to the tank (If so, how long?) or not?

My children were bought 2 little goldfish in a teeny 6ltr (1.5 gal) tank last week with under gravel filter - we added an air pump with air stone to make things more comfortable for the 2 goldfish - i have been changing about 25 - 30 percent of the water every day (adding dechlorinator to the new water) if is becoming a bit of a pain - i dont want the fish to die, but wonder when it will be safe to cut down on the water changes?
any advice on new tank set up care welcome!!!

They keep a betta in the tank with the underground filter and air pump. We completely do a 100% water change once a week and there is only 1 little low bioload fish in each tank.
Unfortunately, goldfish are not as easy to take care of. A goldfish can live for 20 yrs and gets up to 8%26quot; when taken care of properly. They require 10 gallons per goldfish and extra filtration because of the high output of ammonia (through decaying food as they are messy eaters, urine, feces and simply through exhalation of oxygen through their gills!). In a 20 gallon tank with 2 goldfish, a filter meant for a 30 gallon tank is recommended, with weekly water changes of about 25 - 30%. While it is somewhat true that fish will only grow to their tank size (called stunting), it causes internal organ damage and early death. A water testing kit that includes a test for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate is necessary. Ammonia is toxic and burns the fins, skin, eyes and worst of all..the gills. The next step in a cycled tank after the ammonia spike is nitrite. Nitrite lasts a few weeks and is also toxic. It creates long term problems as the fish damage their ability to do an oxygen exchange and they die of asphyxiation. The third step in cycling is the creation of nitrate. Nitrate should be kept at 20 ppm in a cycled tank and will eat up the other bacteria as quickly as they form as long as you do the weekly water changes.
Because of this, my 6 yr old twin boys were only allowed to get bettas. Do i still need to perform water partial water change after my fish tank has cycled?
hi everybody, i had 80 gallons fish tank and it has been set up for almost 10 days, i perform 30 to 40 % water change every week i am just wondering if i still need to perform partial water change after my tank has been cycled and how often i should clean my external canister filter.Do i still need to perform water partial water change after my fish tank has cycled?You have to do at least a 50% water change right after your tank has been cycled because nitrates will be extremely high. After that change the water 20%-30% weekly.
To clean the filter media, get a bucket of old tank water. Then wash the biological filter media by just rinsing it in the tank water in the bucket. Then wash the filter floss or foam (stuff for trapping debris and poop) in the bucket and squeeze it until it looks clean enough to put back in.

Why is my fish tank water green?
I keep the plastic scrubbed, the filters changed and clean, i changw the water regularly. But now the water is green, I've even used algae control recently, and the water is still clean, there is no visible algae, because i clean it, but the water stays green, even right after the partial water change. i don't know why or how to fix it. it looks nasty and I just want it to be clear again.Why is my fish tank water green?Green water occurs when you have too much light, and nutrients.
