How do i know when my filter needs to be changed?

the water in my tank is kind of cloudy

i have 3 fish, and a african dwarf frog in it

should i change the water, or just the filter...?How do i know when my filter needs to be changed? The filter should be changed about once a month. However, when your tank is overstocked (like my guppy tank) it may need to be changed more frequently. If you notice that the water flow level coming from the filter is less than normal, it definately needs to be changed! Just don't take out your entire filter unit and wash it, it will get rid of all the helpful bacteria that has built up there since you set up the tank. How do i know when my filter needs to be changed?Change media every 6 months, but take apart whole filter %26amp; clean it every 2 wks-1mth rinsing media in tank water. Only change carbon if you use it, but it is not necessary to use unless after you medicate your fish.

How do i know when my filter needs to be changed?well the water in your tank is cloudy because there is a bacteria bloom which you need. you should NEVER change your filter media! only the carbon if you have it in the filter. everything else should never be changed. you should only rinse it in tank water so that you keep most of the bacteria otherwise your tank will go into a mini cycle which is what most likely happening in your tank at the moment.

make sure you have no ammonia and nitriates. if you have then do immediate water change and keep doing them everyday until you have 0ammonia and 0nitrites. otherwise your fish might die.

good luck! How do i know when my filter needs to be changed? Not necessarily water color change, but just use your judgment. Inspect the filter when you do a water change and occasionally rinse it WITH TANK water so you don't kill the nitrifying bacteria cultures by using chlorinated tap water. If they are getting clogged or overrun with gunk, then its time to change. How do i know when my filter needs to be changed?I know nothing about fish tank filters
